Cage Information

Bolt-in Roll Cage:

  • Bolt-in kits are a quick and effective way of installing a roll cage in a car.
  • Due to the bolts and fixings, they are always heavier than a weld-in kit, but will only require welding for footplates.
  • Our kits employ FIA tested and certificated ‘lap-joints’ which are stronger and lighter than traditional fixings – and almost invisible once painted.
  • We also try to avoid using footplate boxes – they are no longer acceptable for International events. Our kits employ underfloor doubler plates instead.
  • Depending on category and model they may have up to 14 fixing points.
  • High tensile 12.9 grade fixings used (and supplied) throughout.
  • Supplied either powder-coated or plain steel.

Roll Cage Kit Contents

Your roll cage arrives shrink-wrapped in durable black plastic. And by the way, it is very heavy!

Inside you will find:

  • CNC formed tubes for the main hoop, A pillar hoops etc with square and profiled ends are necessary.
  • Straight tubes with profiled ends ready for welding into place.
  • Set of footplates.
  • Check list (every tube has an identifying sticker) so you can be sure you have a complete kit (we will have already have checked that you have the right tubes twice before the kit is packed).
  • Instructions sheet.
  • CD showing the fully fitted roll cage.

Roll Cage Certification

To compete in any race or rally your roll cage will need to comply with either MSA or FIA regulations.

Effectively, the MSA is governed by the FIA so if a roll cage design complies with FIA regs, then it is also eligible for MSA events.

There are some instances where the FIA allows certain design features where the MSA do not (and vice versa).

The certification process generally allows for a lighter roll cage because it is a bespoke design where the diameter and thickness of each tube is optimised to achieve the overall strength required by the FIA/MSA rules.

In order to compete in MSA/FIA events every vehicle, which has a certificated design of roll cage, should have a copy of a valid certificate to present at scrutineering. Custom Cages has certified the majority of popular roll cages. All other roll cages comply with MSA/FIA regulations and receive a Letter of Conformity for competitors to present to scrutineers.

To obtain a certificate for a self-fit roll cage, the installer must complete a Custom Cages weld test.

Custom Cages’ roll cage kits include a weld test sample. Once completed these are returned to the company for load testing. They are subjected to a physical test to assess the actual yield strength of the weld. This ensures that the self-fit roll cages achieve the highest standards of integrity.

Additional samples may be requested.

Certificates will only be issued on completion of a successful test.

Please be aware that there is a charge of £60.00 + VAT for all MS UK / FIA Certificates
