Jaguar goes GT racing

The handsome Jaguar XKR is the latest exciting addition to international GT racing and Custom Cages has played its part in developing these GT3 machines.

The company was asked by Apex Racing to develop a full 2007 International FIA/MSA cage for the aluminium-bodies sports car, quite a challenge when most roll cages are welded in for maximum strength. Considerable engineering work was needed to design the mounting points.

The Jaguar door sill is a large aluminium extrusion so the solution was to fit a steel plate with captive nuts within the sill so that the cage footplate could be bonded and bolted in. At the front use was made of the large die casting that provides strength to the front pillar area. Bosses mounted on the cage were bolted into the castings. A similar technique was used behind the rear door and around the wheel arch.

The XKR GT3 counts as one of the most challenging jobs undertaken by Custom Cages. Five of these purposeful Jaguars have now been to Daventry for their roll cages. And on the track their performance is improving rapidly.
